Why join a Home Group?
- It has been shown that spiritual growth is more rapid when one spends time in “community” with other believers.
- Home Groups become a safe place to share life’s struggles and challenges.
- Home Groups build and strengthen relationships and help create strong friendships.
- Home Groups encourage us to yield ourselves to the Word of God, protecting us from sin, false doctrine, and spiritual apathy.
- Home Groups are FUN! The “Joy Factor” in the Christian walk increases when we are in close relationship with one another.
What is the purpose of Home Groups?
The three main purposes of Home Groups are:
1. Spiritual Growth – growing together spiritually as we study and discuss God’s Word and challenge each other to a deeper walk with God.
2. Build Relationships – developing relationships where we are able to support and encourage one another, provide accountability to one another and experience community.
3. Experience God’s presence worshipping and praying together as we experience His Spirit and presence as a group – connecting to one another for the purpose of connecting with God.
What does Home Group mean?
Home Groups consist of anywhere from 4 to 18 people coming together on a regular basis, studying God’s Word and the Christian life in a setting that is conducive to relationship building and spiritual growth.
Examples of Home Groups in Scripture may be found in the book of Acts:
Acts 2:46 “Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
Acts 5:42 “And every day in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.”
How often do Home Groups meet?
Home Groups set up their own schedule according to the needs of those in the group. Most meet weekly, but some meet twice a month. Sometimes the groups will take a break during the holiday seasons. Many groups decide to discontinue for the summer but others try to get together once or twice a month for encouragement and fellowship.
What do Home Groups Study?
Home Groups may begin with a study chosen by a leader or recommended by a Pastor or other church leader. Once a group has completed their initial study and decides to continue meeting, they often choose their own study from a selection of materials available through the church or other source. It may be a study from a series, something designed for Home Groups, a topic of interest, or a passage of Scripture.
What happens at a Home Group Meeting?
A typical Home Group meeting would begin with a time of fellowship and small talk. Home groups may choose their own approved curriculum for the study but all would include a time of study, a time to share prayer requests and a time of prayer. Many groups also serve light refreshments. Most Home Group meetings last an hour and a half to two hours. Some arrange childcare, others do not.
